[Seoul Craft Museum] Becoming a Diplomatic Envoy_A Cultural Common Ground Formed via 'Crafts' as a Bridge After Establishing Diplomatic Relations with France. feat. Master Im Chung-hyu's Mother-of-Pearl Lacquerware + Jemulpo-gu Alleyways
Im Chung-hyu Gallery, Baedari Gaehang-ro Craft Workshop 032 571 5757
July 22, 2026, 18:10
I viewed "The Hybrid" on the 3rd floor.
A cultural common ground was formed via 'crafts' as a bridge after establishing diplomatic relations with France.
The exhibition "The Hybrid" showcases crafts at the boundaries between tradition and modernity, and between East and West. A new form of craft emerged as unfamiliar cultural artifacts were combined with our traditional materials, patterns, and techniques. This exhibition presents hybrid crafts created through the collision and fusion of cultures.

[Gaehang-ro Thoughts]
We live in an era where artificial intelligence (AI) paints pictures, composes music, and even performs design work. Technology is rapidly expanding the realm of human creativity. However, no matter how sophisticated AI becomes, there is something it can never replace: the experience accumulated over a long period of time and the memory of the hands. Mother-of-pearl lacquerware is a representative cultural heritage that most vividly demonstrates this human sense of time.
The essence of mother-of-pearl lacquerware lies not in elaborate decoration, but in the value of time. The process of attaching thin pieces of mother-of-pearl one by one, and repeating lacquering, drying, and polishing dozens of times, cannot be completed overnight. A single work of art is born only when long-standing skill, patience, and the life of the craftsman are accumulated. This time transcends a simple production process; it is a cultural asset that encapsulates technology, experience, and spirit.
Paradoxically, as technology advances, the rarity and cultural value of works imbued with human time and devotion grow even greater. This is precisely why mother-of-pearl lacquerware remains necessary today.
The essence of culture lies in connecting human beings. Mother-of-pearl lacquerware imbues the spirit of the craftsman into the work and passes it down to the next generation, allowing those who encounter it to experience Korean history, aesthetics, and the life of the artisan. A single work is not merely a craft item, but a cultural language that links the past and present, and the local and the world, serving as a medium that connects diverse people through understanding and empathy. For this reason, crafts can be the most natural and persuasive means of cultural diplomacy.
The alleyways of Jemulpo, particularly the areas of Gaehang-ro, Gyeongdong, and Ssarijae, are spaces of authenticity accumulated over time. Alleyways come alive because of the people, and culture is passed down through the artisans. A region's competitiveness does not lie solely in new buildings. It lies in reviving its long history, life, and the skills of its artisans into contemporary cultural content to share with the world.
Mother-of-pearl lacquerware is not merely a relic preserving the past, but a living cultural heritage that transforms time into present value.
I hope that the alleyways of Jemulpo will go beyond being spaces that embrace history and become cultural hubs that convey the region's identity to people around the world.
This is the reason I hope that mother-of-pearl lacquerware, which holds the value of time, and the Jemulpo alleyways, where time has accumulated, will continue to remain the most competitive cultural assets connecting people to people and the region to the world.
